Sarah Carr meets with Herefordshire Police Chief to raise front desk concerns

1.48.20pm GMT Mon 22nd Feb 2010

Following public concern that West Mercia Police are planning to close the front desks at Peterchurch and South Wye Police stations, Sarah Carr, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Hereford, Ross and South Herefordshire has met one-to one with Herefordshire's Police Commander to question him on the proposed closures whilst also raising concerns about lack of visible policing in specific areas.

The Police Commander said that the closure of the front desks was still in consultation and that the actual police stations were not under threat themselves. The Commander also sought to reassure Mrs Carr about the numbers of police out on the beat and their strategy for ensuring Herefordshire remains a low crime area.

Commenting Sarah Carr said,

"Many local people have been concerned about the proposed closure of the Peterchurch and South Wye Police Station front desks and have raised important questions as to whether the actual stations are under threat. I was pleased to be informed by the Commander that the actual stations are not under threat as this would have been a great worry and that no final decision has been made as yet about the opening times of the front desks.

"It is important to support our local police officers in the essential work they do and to ensure they are getting the funding they need to serve our local communities and ensure people feel safe. I am in close contact with our local police force and will continue to raise concerns as brought to me by members of the public to support our local officers in their work keeping our communities safe. The Liberal Democrats are, after all, the only political party committed to putting 3,000 more police on the street."
