Food Bank highlights school holiday problems

A recent visit to Hereford Food Bank by Lord German and Lucy Hurds, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate, highlighted the increased pressure on food banks during school holidays

Food Bank co-ordinator Jacquie Alsop explained that during school holidays many families, which rely on free school meals, struggle to feed their children and referrals to the Food Bank increase significantly.

The Hereford Food Bank delivered 456 food parcels between January and June 2015. They are currently in urgent need of tins of meat, potatoes and vegetables as well as supplies for young children such as toothpaste and disposal nappies. There are collection points in many local churches, Hereford Library, Cathedral or direct to the Food Bank office in Aubrey Street.

Lucy Hurds added "The need for Food Banks really does increase during school holidays and I hope that everyone will try to donate. I have been talking to a number of places to increase drop-off points for food and am pleased to announce that Belmont Community Centre will now have a permanent box in their lobby."
